Second in the Selection Guide

Journalism gets a score of 4.6

  • Windesheim gets the second place in the Selection Guide HBO.
  • The new educational concept seems to be the reason for the bad scores in some study programmes.

For the third year in a row, Windesheim reached a second place in the Selection Guide (the Dutch information guide ‘Keuzegids’ with rankings of all universities of applied sciences). The score of 67,5 points for Windesheim in the new Selection Guide HBO 2018 is two points higher than last year. Windesheim  is the greatest riser in the category of large universities of applied sciences, in which Avans is number one with 69 points.

The study programme Spatial Development at Windesheim Flevoland received the highest score, just like last year. They received 88 points. Spatial Development Zwolle received the second highest score (86), together with the study programmes Marketing management Almere and Global Project and Change Management in Zwolle. The last one also received a special note in the Selection Guide, as the most international English speaking HBO-study programme. Third best of Windesheim is Electrical and Electronic Engineering (84) this year.  A notable riser is the Teacher Education in Primary Schools in Almere, which went from 56 to 70 points.

Journalism, which seemed to be climbing up from the bottom last year, received a big insufficient mark (46 points), which is even lower than two years ago. ‘This was a surprise to us, because our students are more active and more involved in the study programme than the preceding years.’ says the study programme director Miranda van Dijk. The offering of more flexible programmes could be a point of improvement, according to Van Dijk. The Teacher Education in English and Nursing Almere scored lower than a 5 as well. Teacher Education in Religion received an insufficient (52) this year for the first time. Study programme manager Peter de Haan says the decline is because of the cancellation of the learning place in Amsterdam, the illness of some core teachers and the new curriculum. ‘We did not have the experience data of students in the new curriculum at our disposal.’ Even more painful is the decline of Industrial Engineering & Management. That study programme saw the largest decline of Windesheim (from 66 to 52 points). Study programme director Jens de Craen: ‘The implementation of the new educational concept did not always go well. Students gave us the feedback that we had partially lost involvement. A painful finding for us.’ The study programme thinks it will do better from now on. ‘With a new team, less complicated connections with regards to students and an improved evaluation cycle with the student in the leading position, this year the involvement with the students will be the top priority.’ (EM)
